As the Director of the Johns Hopkins Facial Prosthetics Clinic, Juan works as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team in the care of patient requiring facial and somatic prostheses as well as custom surgical models, guides, and subdermal implants. Research interests on which he has published and lectured include: osseointegrated prosthetic rehabilitation, custom surgical guides and stents for nasal autogenous tissue reconstruction, use of image guided surgery in osseointegrated implant placement, surface laser scanning for auricular, orbital, and hand cases, rapid prototyping of custom surgical guides, and development of a metamerism-free intrinsic coloration system using spectrophotometric analysis of skin tones.
Juan received both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science degree from University of Miami. At Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he received a Master of Arts degree in Medical and Biological Illustration, where he now currently serves on the faculty as an Assistant Professor. Coursework he teaches include: Medical Sculpture, Digital Imaging, and Ophthalmological Illustration.
Juan is a former President of the American Anaplastology Association-AAA (now known as the International Anaplastology Association-IAA). He currently serves on the Job Analysis and Certification Development committees of the Board for Certification in Clinical Anaplastology-BCCA. In this capacity, he has led efforts in conducting the first ever role delineation in anaplastology as well as coordinated certification exam development.
